The Woman with the 5 Elephants (2009)

“An elegant, slightly chilly documentary” – NYTimes

“Quietly astonishing.” – Mark Jenkins, NPR critic
“Jendreyko has clearly considered how best to translate an entire life into a movie.” – AV Club

Swetlana Geier is considered the pre-eminent translator of Russian literature
into German. Her work is characterized by a great feeling for language and an uncompromising respect for the writers she translates. Her life has been overshadowed by periods of dark history in Europe. Together with the film director Vadim Jendreyko, the 85 year old woman makes her first trip from her new home in Germany back to the places of her childhood in Ukraine.

The five elephants refer to her valedictory project, a 20-year effort to retranslate Dostoyevsky’s five major novels, which she completed in 2007.
